I've never quite understood the appeal of Michael Smerconish, radio talk show host at 1210 a.m., The Big Talker, in Philadelphia. It has always seemed to me that, just like the bloviating (mostly liberal) senators in Congress, Michael is in love with his own voice -- a side-effect of taking himself waaay too seriously. I mean, c'mon! He's actually proud of the fact that he's an MSNBC contributor? To give him some credit, he's never actually (to my knowledge) promoted himself as a conservative Republican, simply one who sides with Republicans on some issues (Mark, correct me if I am wrong).
While he's entitled to his own opinions, this guy typifies the type of "conservative" outlets like MSNBC can promote as representative of the other side, then pat themselves on the back for their "fairness." And so it was no surprise when I opened up Reihl World View today and discovered this little bit of news:

Sept. 11, 2008 Where the hell are Osama bin Laden and Ayman al-Zawahiri? And why does virtually no one ask anymore? What's changed since the days when any suburban soccer mom would have strangled either of them with her bare hands if given the chance? And what happened to President Bush's declaration to a joint session of Congress nine days after 9/11 that "any nation that continues to harbor or support terrorism will be regarded by the United States as a hostile regime." Doesn't that apply to Pakistan?
These are things that I wonder as I watch from my perch in Philadelphia, where I'm a talk show host, columnist and MSNBC talking head.

Michael makes these RINO statements because he would like to get his own cable network show. He has mentioned this on his radio program. His life has become a continuous audition for MSNBC. He tries to sound principled to his listeners in Philly -- libertarian, even. But as I said, he wants the call. Nothing wrong with that. The man's ambitious and he never misses an opportunity to let his listeners know how hard he works.
However, as someone in the business, and familiar with his situation, I can tell you that even if Smerc does get a slot in the lineup, he won't last. His "cosmetics" aren't right, and he sounds like a chick when he laughs.
Shallow, I know, but that's show biz.
