Scary Thought

Now that Joe Biden has already put his foot in his mouth with this lovely quote:

“I hear all this talk about how the Republicans are going to work in dealing with parents who have both the joy, because there's joy to it as well, the joy and the difficulty of raising a child who has a developmental disability, who were born with a birth defect. Well guess what folks? If you care about it, why don't you support stem cell research?”

Could Hill make a comeback?

Is Biden's comment a not-so-thinly veiled slam against Governor Palin and her husband Todd, who decided to keep their handicapped child rather than snuff him out in the womb? At best, it's clumsy and at worst it's reprehensible. What does Trig Palin, or any other child born with a disability have to do with stem-cell research? About six months or so ago (can't recall exactly when), there was real excitement in the scientific community over the breakthroughs made using skin cells. Perhaps Doc Paul can enlighten us further on that, but it seems obvious to me that if you can get the same results from skin cells as you can from embryonic ones (the kind Palin is opposed to as a pro-lifer), why not err on the side of life?

And if you really want to win the Vice-Presidency, why stoop to the malevolent level of using an innocent baby as a metaphorical club against his mother, just because you disagree with her policy positions? Is there nothing sacred with Joe Biden or he just incapable of not running off his mouth?

Which brings me back to my scary thought: I was listening to The Schnitt Show on the way home today, and our insightful host announced that Barack Obama is scheduled to have lunch with Bill Clinton. Schnitt then opined he "didn't need to be a fly on the wall" to ascertain the contents of that conversation, then in his best Bill Clinton voice admonished, "You shoulda picked my wife!" Then the radio talker wondered aloud if there would be an "Eagleton option" on the Democratic ticket. If Biden gets in touch with his inner gaffe-child, as evidenced by this particularly distasteful comment to a crowd in Ohio, could Obama cut him loose and -- horrors! -- offer the VP slot to Hillary?
